Adult ECMO Specialist Training Didactic Portion

The Adult ECMO Course – Didactic Portion provides comprehensive education on the principles, physiology, and management of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for adult patients. Designed for nurses, perfusionists, respiratory therapists, and critical care professionals, this self-paced, video-based course delivers the essential theoretical foundation required to safely support adult patients on ECMO.

Learners will explore ECMO circuit anatomy, oxygenator and pump mechanics, anticoagulation management, adult patient selection, and hemodynamic integration through clear, structured lectures presented by experienced ECMO specialists. The curriculum focuses on adult cardiac and respiratory failure management using veno-arterial (VA) and veno-venous (VV) ECMO configurations.

This course covers the didactic portion only and does not include a simulation component. Participants seeking full ECMO competency and ELSO certification exam readiness should complete a separate hands-on simulation or clinical practicum in addition to this theoretical training.

By the end of the didactic program, participants will be able to:
  • Identify and describe major ECMO circuit components and their functions.
  • Explain gas exchange and blood flow principles in adult ECMO systems.
  • Recognize patient indications, contraindications, and potential complications.
  • Understand the roles and communication dynamics within the ECMO care team.

This 17-hour online didactic course provides the essential cognitive framework for professionals involved in adult extracorporeal life support and serves as a strong preparatory step toward ELSO certification when followed by simulation-based training.
